Charli XCX today releases ‘Von dutch’ - the first single taken from her highly anticipated forthcoming new album ‘BRAT’.

Charli XCX releases her official music video for Speed Drive, her track from Barbie The Album. Speed Drive has amassed over 70M global streams, hit #9 on the UK Official Charts and entered the Billboard Hot 100 becoming Charli’s fifth song to chart in the US.

Filmed in Los Angeles, the video was co-directed by Charli with Ramez Silyan, starring Charli and Devon Lee Carlson racing a pink Corvette convertible under the Californian sun. In the video Charli teases an upcoming project with Sam Smith when she receives a phone call from Sam on her Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5.

Charli continues to position herself as a prolific collaborator in the film space, producing original scores and tracks for feature film story-telling. Earlier this year Charli made ‘Hot Girl’, the official song for A24 teen slasher film Bodies, Bodies, Bodies directed by Halina Reijn and starring Rachel Sennott; the track instantly went down as a cult fan favorite. Today Charli XCX releases the video for ‘forever’, the debut track taken from her forthcoming album ‘how i’m feeling now’. Charli announced the visual at the second of her Zoom press conferences last night with fans and special guests such as Nadya Tolokno of Pussy Riot and Shamir Bailey in attendance. The video is co-directed by Charli and Dan Streit and takes fan collaboration to the next level, with Charli’s fans, known as the Angels, contributing over 5000 clips to be stitched together to create the video. Sending out an open call to her fans, Charli collated Angels’ past memories, as well as tender moments shared directly from their phone camera roll. ‘forever’ was written by Charli XCX and produced by A. G. Cook and BJ Burton. The track was created within two days, with Charli teaming up with Cook and Burton via the internet while all three are in self-isolation. This is a working process that will continue throughout the album, with the entirety of the project being written, recorded, produced and released while in quarantine, with the process being shared with her fans for feedback, contributions and more. A romantic, hopeful cut of progressive pop, ‘forever’ glows with luminous synths and cascading pixelated textures. "Warm" is produced by A. G. Cook and was written by Charli and HAIM in Charli’s Los Angeles studio. A track about a relationship of unrequited love.

‘It’s a really beautiful song and the idea actually came about because A.G. sent me this demo of him singing just a melody, no lyrics, but it was so beautiful and I sat with it for ages and just played it over and over again. I really like it when A.G. sings, it’s always really inspiring to me so I wrote these lyrics, it’s about unrequited love or more just like when you are in it with someone and they are a player and you aren’t in that zone and you just can’t get on the same page. Schon Anfang 2013 hat Charli XCX mit ihrem Albumdebüt „True Romance“ ein dunkel-stürmisches, Synthie-getriebenes und von Fans wie Medien hart abgefeiertes Meisterwerk abgeliefert. Doch nicht nur das: Mit dem von ihr komponierten globalen Mega-Sommerhit „I Love It“ verhalf sie dem schwedischen Duo Icona Pop zum internationalen Durchbruch und schoss mit dem Iggy Azalea-Duett „Fancy“ aus dem Stand auf Platz 1 der US-Charts mit mehr als 5 Millionen weltweit verkaufter Einheiten. Tendenz: Immer noch steigend. Doch schon als „True Romance“ veröffentlicht wurde, begann die 22-jährige Britin an dem zu arbeiten, was heute in Form ihres zweiten Albums „Sucker “ das Licht der Welt erblickt: Eine 14 Tracks umfassende Songsammlung, die sich von ihrer vorab ausgekoppelten Smashsingle „Boom Clap“ (ihrem aller ersten Top 10-Entry in den UK, der mit ebenso großer Wucht in die Top 10 der US-Single-Charts einschlug) und dem rotzig-frechen Poppunk-Stück „Break The Rules“, über das aufgekratzt-augenzwinkernde „London Queen“ bis zum experimentierfreudigen HipHop-Pop von „Gold Coins“ spannt. „Um die Zeit, als`True Romance` in die Läden kam, habe ich mich endgültig bereit gefühlt“, so Charli über ihre kreative Rastlosigkeit. „Ich weiß genau, wer ich heute bin und wollte es noch mal machen – nur besser. Ich denke, das hier ist die beste Musik, die ich je gemacht habe.“

Und obwohl sie sich schon seit Anfang ihrer Karriere wie ein echte Popstar benahm, Songs wie ein echter Popstar schrieb und all das aus allen Poren verströmte, was einen echten Popstart ausmacht, benötigte die anfänglich noch fremdelnde Öffentlichkeit ein wenig Zeit, um mit dem beginnenden Popphänomen Charli XCX so richtig warm zu werden. Mit ihrer krawallig-ohrwurmigen Party-Hymne „I Love It“ änderte sich dies; so wie ihre Sichtweise auf den Fokus dessen, was wirklich schließlich zählte. „Ich habe versucht, aus mir etwas rauszuquetschen, was einfach noch nicht raus wollte“, erklärt sie rückblickend. „Dann habe ich mich wieder auf mich besonnen.“ Mit dem enormen Druck im Rücken, den immensen Erfolg von „I Love It“ wiederholen zu müssen, verschanzte sie sich im April 2014 zusammen mit einer Hand voll Freunde/ Songwriter/ Producer in einem verlassenen Hotel im schwedischen Strangnas. Gemeinsam mit u.a. Patrik Berger (Lana Del Rey, Robyn, Loreen), Vampire Weekend-Member Rostam Batmanglij, Pontus Winnberg (Britney Spears, Madonna, Katy Perry) und Andrew Wyatt (Mark Ronson, Bruno Mars, Carl Barat) machte man sich daran, Charlis Sound ein wenig zu pimpen und die mitgebrachten Demos auszuarbeiten.
Bereits im Vorjahr begann Charli, zusammen mit Patrik Berger in seinem Stockholmer Studio an ihrem Durchbruchshit „Boom Clap“ zu feilen. „Es kam mir so vor, als wenn mich die Leute nach diesem Hit mit einem Mal ganz anders wahrnahmen – ein schönes Gefühl, weil es bis dorthin wirklich lange gedauert hat. Es ist lustig, aber als das alles dann tatsächlich geschah, habe ich es gar nicht so sehr wahrgenommen. Ich war eigentlich ziemlich entspannt und habe mich eher auf das neue Album konzentriert und darauf, mit etwas härteren Sounds zu hantieren. Ich wollte, dass das neue Material sehr Gitarren-orientiert wird und ich wollte es vor allem schnell aufnehmen. Ich habe bisher keinen einzigen Song geschrieben, um cool zu wirken oder was auch immer. Ich habe alles so geschrieben, wie es aus meinem Kopf kam. Ich würde es Raw Pop nennen. Das trifft auch ziemlich gut, was ich auf der Bühne verkörpere. Ich bin alles andere als glatt gebügelt. Weichgespülte Musik langweilt mich.“
Befreit vom Druck, einen bestimmten Sound wiederholen zu müssen, kanalisierte Charli ihre unterschwellige Frustration zu „Sucker“ - wie sie schon auf dem sofort nach vorne gehenden Titeltrack mit aller Schlagkraft demonstriert. „Schon vom ersten Song an knallt einem diese Platte so richtig ins Gesicht! Auf dem Album ist deutlich eine gewisse Aggression spürbar. Aber ebenso auch ein gewisser ironischer Unterton.“ Eine feine Gratwanderung zwischen Selbstironie und Wut, die sich ganz besonders in Stücken wie„London Queen“, „Break The Rules“ oder der selbst erfüllenden Pop-Prophezeiung „Famous“ widerspiegelt. „Gerade `Famous` ist ein gutes Beispiel für diese Mischung. Ich habe das Stück an nur einem halben Tag mit Greg Kurstin geschrieben. Es handelt absolut nicht davon, berühmt zu sein; ich würde mich selbst definitiv nicht als Berühmtheit bezeichnen. Vielmehr geht es in dem Song darum, auf eine Party zu gehen und sich wie ein absolutes Arschloch zu benehmen“, verrät Charli lachend. „Für mich sind meine Stücke eher wie Karikaturen von Songs. In dieser Platte steckt so vielvon mir als Person. Ich hatte eine Menge mitzuteilen, weil ich hinter den Kulissen der Musikindustrie so viel erlebt habe und nicht mehr nur über Liebe schreiben wollte. Ich wollte über Dinge schreiben, die ich vorher nicht ausdrücken konnte. Ich habe zu dieser Zeit sehr viel für andere Künstler geschrieben, dass die Ideen nur so aus mir raus sprudelten.“

Und tatsächlich waren es Kompositionen für andere Acts – inklusive einer weiteren Hitsingle für Iggy Azalea („Beg For It“) sowie diversen möglichen Singleauskopplungen auf den kommenden Platten so manch bekannter Popgröße – die auf „Sucker“ zur Zusammenarbeit mit Künstlern und Producern wie Steve Mac, Cashmere Cat, Stargate, Benny Blanco und Weezer-Mitglied Rivers Cuomo führten. Wobei Charli zu jeder Zeit als Executive Producer die kreativen Fäden in der Hand behielt und sich ihren einzigartigen Sound von einer derartig hochkarätigen Ansammlung von Mischpult-Allstars nicht etwa hat verwässern lassen. Im Gegenteil. „Ich habe wirklich ganz bewusst versucht, Leute mit Leuten zusammen zu bringen, die keine traditionellen Pop-Produzenten sind. So wie zum Beispiel Rivers oder Justin Raisen oder Rostam – ich denke, das ist ziemlich gut gelungen und genau deshalb klingt die ganze Platte so absolut anders, als man es vielleicht erwarten würde. Man hört einzig und alleine meinen Einfluss auf dem Album, und nicht den meiner Helfer. In meinen Ohren klingt keiner der Songs so, wie man sie sich bei dieser Producer-Liste vorstellen würde. `Break The Rules` zum Beispiel: Der Track klingt nicht im Geringsten nach Steve Mac oder Stargate, weil ich alles selbst miteinander verknüpft habe. Man hört nur meine Stimme, meinen künstlerischen Einfluss.“
Beeinflusst vom typischen „Gang Sound“ des französischen Ye-Ye Pop, stellt „Sucker“ mit seinem catchy lärmigen Ramones- und The Hives-Rockpop-Singalongs viel mehr als nur eine Fortsetzung des Albumvorgängers „True Romance“ dar. „Sucker“ ist der erhobene Mittelfinger in Richtung früherer Kritiker, „die mich immer runtergemacht und mir die Existenzberechtigung als eigenständige Künstlerin abgesprochen haben“, so Charli. Mit schlafwandlerischer Sicherheit bewegt sich Mrs. XCX vom charmant großmäuligen Luxus-Swagger auf dem HipHop-beeinflußten „Gold Coins“ („ich wollte einfach mal einen echt aufgeblasenen Song machen“), über die elegant-mondäne Rivers Cuomo-Kollaboration „Hanging Around“ bis zum zerbrechlichen „Need Your Love“, das in Zusammenarbeit mit Rostam Batmanglij nach einer sprichwörtlich spannungsgeladenen Aufnahmesession entstand.

„Er ist so frustrierend! Er zählt zu meinen liebsten Menschen, aber im Studio bringen wir uns jedes Mal an den Rand des Wahnsinns! Rostam nimmt sich gerne Zeit, um alles 100%ig zu machen. Das zwang mich, anders als sonst ans Songwriting zu gehen, aber mit ihm war das leider nicht möglich.“ Und dann gibt es auf dem Album noch die glitzernde Pop-Überdosis „Die Tonight“, die ursprünglich über ein ganz gewöhnliches Party-Szenario geschrieben wurde und die eine ganz Charli-typische, düstere Wendung verpasst bekommt. „Am meisten liebe ich an dem Song die Stelle, an der der Streicher-Synthie einsetzt und mich aus irgendeinem Grund an den Film `Trainspotting` erinnert. An den Part, in dem er stirbt und in seinen Sarg sinkt. Mir kam dieser völlig neue Gedanke, in dem es in dem Song statt um eine `normale` jugendfreie Feier um eine komplett abgefuckte und extrem gefährliche Party geht. In meinen Ohren klingt der Track heute sehr trippy.“

Die letzte Beschreibung von „Sucker“ sollte jedoch an dieser Stelle der Macherin selbst überlassen bleiben, die ihre Musik gerne in Farben beschreibt. Während sich das Debüt „True Romance“ nochin „violettem Lo-Fi-Luxus-Sound“ darstellte und ihre 2013er Non-Album-Single „SuperLove “ als „roter Chanel-Blazer mit roten Lippenstift-Flecken drauf“ schimmerte, da repräsentiert „Sucker“ heute einen Energie geladenen Farbrausch. „Wie ein roter Blitz auf pinkem Hintergrund!“ Gute Unterhaltung also bei Charli XCX` brandneuem Popgewitter!
